Sectors · IPPs & utilities

Battery storage for IPPs & utilities.

At utility scale a battery is a capacity, a ramp and a fast reserve at the same time. The A625 is the replication unit: the same block, repeated, with the same controls and the same compliance file.

01 · The problem

What the site
is up against.

Firmness

Variable output, firm obligations

Solar and wind need firming to meet a dispatch schedule or a capacity obligation.

Network

Ramp and frequency

Steep ramps and frequency excursions need resources faster than thermal plant.

Market

A market that is opening

Wheeling, trading and network services are moving, and plant must be ready to earn from them.

02 · What storage does

What the battery
does about it.

  1. 01
Capacity firmingSmooths variable output into a firm, contractable profile at the point of connection.
  2. 02
Frequency responseSub-second active-power response to frequency deviation.
  3. 03
Flexible rampingAbsorbs and delivers ramps thermal plant cannot follow.
  4. 04
Voltage supportReactive power and voltage regulation at the point of connection.
  5. 05
Energy shiftingMoves curtailed or low-value energy into the evening peak.
03 · Typical configuration

Indicative,
before the load study.

SystemsA625 or A500 blocks, replicated
Connection33 kV collection through MV skids, to the plant substation
Duration2, 4 or 6 hours (0.5C, 0.25C, 0.167C)
ControlsSolaris, IEC 61850 and IEC 60870-5-104 to the utility
Commercial modelEPC supply, PPA or tolling structure

Every configuration is sized from the site's own interval data and tariff; this is a starting point, not a quote.

04 · Questions

Asked by ipps & utilities
buyers.

Is the plant grid-code compliant?
The interface is designed to the South African grid connection code for renewable power plants, with the grid-code studies prepared for the connection application.
Can it form the grid?
Yes. Grid-forming firmware provides synthetic inertia and voltage support on weak networks and battery-led black start where required.
How is a large plant built up?
From identical 6.25 MWh blocks paralleled on MV skids, so a plant is counted in blocks and every block has the same controls and compliance file.
Next step

Start with your meter data.

Twelve months of interval data, your tariff schedule and your notified maximum demand are enough for a first sizing, an indicative capex and a PPA rate, within five working days, at no cost.
